All companies have a variety of functions aimed at growth. These groups go by the names of Corporate Strategy, R&D, Innovation – as well as M&A and Corporate Venture Capital. But they’re not always aligned. They have their own teams, their own budgets, and their own objectives. So as the future becomes more unpredictable this lack of alignment is becoming a problem. There’s a shift happening from planning for what’s predictable to preparing what’s unpredictable.
What all these different growth functions have in common is a concern for what happens beyond the prediction horizon – that used to be 10 years out. Now it’s 5, or even just 3 years out. There’s a lot to be gained by coordinating these different investments – investments of money, time, attention – so that they reinforce each other in the right way.
